SDG&E customers face a rate hike that will increase typical bills by roughly 11 percent beginning this Sunday. California's tiered rate structure charges in steps depending upon electricity consumption during the billing cycle, where those within the highest tier pay nearly twice the base rate. Furthermore, SDG&E is lobbying with two other investor owned utilities to rewrite utility regulations that will change rate structures, increase fixed rates and repeal net-metering which is drawing heavy criticism from environmentalists and solar advocates.
