Solar cells are devices that convert the sun's energy into electricity. When assembled together, solar cells are referred to as solar panels and, if enough are present, they can generate all of the electricity a facility requires. Photovoltaic solar cells generate energy from direct sources of light.
Currently, around 85 percent of all solar power systems installed in the U.S. are installed in California with the City of San Diego having more solar than any other city in the State. With the regularly sunny weather and a growing consciousness of living green, it's no surprise that solar energy systems are taking San Diego and the southern Californian region by storm.
At Sullivan Solar Power, we specialize in developing, building and caring for first-class solar cell systems. If you live in San Diego or anywhere in southern California, we invite you to schedule a free consultation with one of our experienced professionals. We will conduct a thorough evaluation of your property to determine the best solutions for your specific needs.
How Do Solar Cells Work
Solar cells are made from semiconductors, such as silicon, which are materials that absorb light energy. To effectively convert sunlight into energy, the silicon is positioned in such a way as to create an electric field that operates like a diode – meaning that electrons from the light's molecules are allowed to pass through the material in a single direction (and not in reverse). This movement of electrons creates a current and, as a result, generates voltage. Power is the product of both a current and voltage.
To ensure efficiency, the silicon is lined with an anti-reflective coating and a glass plate cover. The solar panels are set in a frame on the roof of a facility concentrated in the area that receives the most sunlight.
